COLLABORATION

CREATE

"Collaboration should not be a painful process. It should be an enjoyable, creative experience."

Hold on, let me just

qualify that...

Essentially, collaborations should pull the best bits from the individuals writing the song. However, there are no rules. The 'music' person should be able to chip in with some words or suggestions if it suits. Similarly the 'lyrics' person may have an idea for the tune.

The key to good collaboration is flexibility. It's essential for writers to work together and who don't feel too precious about their 'work' being altered. As co-writers we must be prepared to give a little.

Lyrics aren't the same as poems. Poems are meant to be read, sometimes aloud, in a plain, speaking voice. Lyrics need to be sung to a tune and need to have what the great Sammy Cahn referred to as 'Singability,' where the marriage of words and music fit together perfectly and sung easily.

The finished song should always be greater than the sum of the parts.

Well, that's my theory.
